Internet Addiction Among Indian Teenagers

About 73% of teenagers in India face problems arising from internet addiction – says a recent study by National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore.

Most children aged from 13 to 17 years who exhibited signs of behavioral problems were found to be addicted to social networks like Facebook, mobile games, etc.

Addiction to internet, social media and multimedia games has the same form as that of substance abuse and addictions to alcohol, tobacco, etc.

Among the several cases of internet addiction, a child started getting seizures because of sleep deprivation due to excess use of Facebook – as case reported from Kochi, Kerala.

Peer-pressure is one important contributing factor to internet addiction. Everyone in the friends circle will be telling experiences of using Facebook, playing mobile games, etc. This puts pressure on young children to imitate others.

Most children brought for counselling exhibit telltale signs of addictions – like spending several hours in closed rooms.

Internet addiction is prevalent not only among children from major cities like Trivandrum, Kochi, Calicut, etc, but also among kids of smaller towns of Kerala.
